What is a Copywriter, anyway?
A copywriter takes your advertising expenses and turns them into investments.
Here's an example: It was a magazine ad. The purpose was to drive traffic to their web site to make a purchase. Because it was prepared by an agency, the client believed the ad would work.
Here are three things I fixed to make the ad a success:
1. The logo got moved from the top half of the ad to the bottom right corner.
Since the purpose of the ad was to show customers how they can satisfy their need for official construction documents, the logo belongs in the bottom right corner as a brand symbol.
The top half of the ad was then fixed by filling it with a new domain name: GetConstructionDocumentsHere.com
The original ad directed customers to the home page of the client's site. Then they had to find the link for the online store and go through several clicks to get to the shopping page. This was easily fixed by setting the new domain name to take customers directly to the shopping page.
Customers like getting instant gratification.
2. The ad text was replaced with a clear, concise list of what's in it for the customer.
The ad was being placed in magazines for architects, engineers and lawyers. So the list showed them the official construction documents these consultants need and will find at the online store.
Lots of people believe an ad will work because an agency, or the newspaper, or an advertising sales person wrote it. After all, that's what they're paid for, right?
